Spiritual Warfare (Part I)

Ephesians 6:12 NLT For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in heavenly places. At a young age I was introduced to this battle-ready verse & the significance of Spiritual Warfare. My parents were missionaries to Haiti for a season in their life. Because I was only a baby at the time they could not take me due to the dangerous conditions. (they had to travel by donkey through treacherous mountains-overlooking cliffs of hundreds of feet, and live in very primitive conditions) However, they returned with stories they would eventually share with me when I was older and those stories have impacted my life tremendously.

Let me just say this....I am passionate about the subject of spiritual warfare. It’s not one that’s discussed often or in much detail - except to quote or refer to as a passing by glance of acknowledgment. Admittedly most don’t want to think about it bc it comes with a dark side-one we don’t want to really face. But God tells us - “My people perish from a lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6 It’s one thing for us to know our Bible but it’s another thing entirely to KNOW the God of the Bible. Charles Haddon Spurgeon once said, “The scripture is our inexhaustible text book, the Lord Jesus our boundless subject & the Holy Spirit our divine infinite helper.” My challenge for us all is - how well do we know the scriptures? There is great wisdom, amazing tools, and battle-ready armor inside those pages that come to life when used!

“My people perish from a lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6 ... My challenge for us all is - how well do we know the scriptures? Dad & Mom lived to serve others. They demonstrated that in our community but also reached out across the borders into a 3rd world country. Dad was a carpenter and felt led to go and help build simple homes for the people. The poverty level was staggering. So he and a few other men and their wives went to Haiti after he learned about the desperate need from a missionary who visited our church. The stories from Haiti were priceless. Some of the stories were funny. My mom often would share how closed bathrooms were not available and that everyone was extremely curious to see if these missionaries went to the bathroom the same way! God bless mom for her sense of humor bc you definitely needed it on the mission field! Dad would share a story of how he and a few of the men would sing a song in Swahili as they went through the village inviting the Haitians to come listen to the man talk about Jesus. My Dad taught us kids the song and to this day we still sing it. The words were....”Come and go with me to my Father’s house- to my Father’s house -to my Father’s house, come and go with me to my Father’s house there is joy, joy, joy! If you are not familiar with the culture of Haiti, each village has its own doctor-a witch doctor. And this....is where the funny stories end. My parents also shared the darkness that ruled over Haiti & it’s people. Voodoo is described in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as: a religion That is derived from African polytheism and ancestor worship chiefly in Haiti. It consists of rituals with traditional African magic and religious rites and characterized by sorcery and spirit possession. My Dad would share how they would go into the different places where the Haitians would preform their rituals and invite them to a service to hear the good news about Jesus and to hand out bibles in Swahili. Some of the missionary men felt so oppressed that they could not stay. My Dad recognized the demonic forces but stood his ground and did not turn back. He knew that his God was greater! As time went on the Haitians grew to trust the missionaries and would come to the meetings to hear about Jesus. But this experience.....it changed my parents view....of the spirit realm & how it works & how to prepare for it & how to fight against it.....completely and forever. Stayed tuned for part 2 of this blog....coming next month! I’ll talk about our weapons and how to use them! You don’t want to miss it!
