Who is on Your Path, II

It was the following day or the day after, that I thought I would get on that bike path again and take a picture of the ramp and the inclines Ben must navigate.

Well, God put Ben in my path almost immediately. I stopped to speak with him. He pulled his wheelchair to the side of the trail so others could pass by. He shared more with me about what he does during the day. He enjoys his rolling and going to neighborhood stores and restaurants. He has been trying different wheelchairs because his is not in good shape. I mentioned to him my career was in social work and I assisted others in getting services into their homes. Ben was very adamant about not having services because he is independent. He is aware of the help that he could have. He wants to take care of himself.

Ben asked me what I was doing today. I told him I was working on my blog post that was about him because he inspired me with what he does: rolling and having to climb ramps to get to his destinations. I mentioned that my purpose today was to take a picture of the ramp he uses. Ben said he enjoys rolling but going up inclines is difficult for him and he doesn't want help. He told me the ramp I was taking a picture of was the one close to where he lives.

I briefly left and took a picture of the ramp he uses and returned to him. The ramp was only a quarter of a mile away. When I returned Ben mentioned how fast I was coming back. I jokingly stated, we're like the tortoise and the hare and he would likely beat me in a race. Ben said, "I'm consistent and never give up." Man, that says it all.

I thanked Ben for his willingness to speak with me. We shook hands. I told him I'll stop and speak with hm again if our paths cross. I left to take my path home as Ben also left, slowly taking his path to wherever he was going.

I made a new friend because I took a chance on meeting someone who others were passing by on their path.

I shared this story because a new friend was made. An opportunity came to me to meet someone I would have never met because I was on this path and God nudged me to overcome my reluctance. I wonder how many people on this path have ever thought about interaction with Ben then changed their mind. Ben touched my heart. Your next friend may be on your path. Will you stop?

Philippians 2:3 "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
